ABOUT SOUTHSIDE ELEMENTARY
A Message from Wendy Randle
Greetings SouthSide Families,
As we prepare for the holiday season, I am reminded of one of my favorite quotations: Your presence is a present to those around you. I am so grateful and appreciative to the families who have been present at our school and those who continue to make SouthSide an even better place. In addition to the amazing turnout at our most recent Family Pasta Night, we continue to have steady participation at our PTO meetings. At our November PTO meeting, we discussed the drills that take place at SouthSide and detailed information was provided to families who were in attendance. In accordance with state laws, we conduct fire drills and/or evacuation drills each month. Additionally, we are required to conduct lockdown drills. During lockdown drills, the exterior doors of the classrooms are secured and students quietly gather in a designated area of the classrooms away from doors and windows. Once teachers confirm that everyone is accounted for, we resume our normal course of business. Our students and staff have done an excellent job of preparing students for these drills and explaining the purpose of the drills in a developmentally appropriate manner. The most important message that is conveyed to the students is that school is safe place and we all have a role in contributing to school safety by practicing drills and taking these procedures seriously.
Another topic that was brought up at the November PTO meeting was snow days. In the event that the Providence Public School Department cancels schools for any reason, including inclement weather, we automatically cancel school, because we share transportation with the Providence Public School Department. When school is cancelled, I notify families via email and the cancellation is posted on the local news channels as well as the RI Emergency Broadcast. If you wish to receive RI Emergency Broadcasts, you can sign up by visiting the RI Emergency Broadcast website and entering your contact information.
As you may already be aware, we have a used uniform closet that is available for families to access. If you have gently used uniforms that no longer fit your child, please consider donating these items to our school. We are also in need of packages of girls' and boys' underwear as well as gloves and hats. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
Please join me in welcoming our newest students to SouthSide: Remy Rodriguez joined our Kindergarten classroom prior to the Thanksgiving break and Teyana Yang recently joined our second grade classroom. We are always so excited to embrace our new students and to make them feel like a part of our family. Our enrollment is now up to 95 and we are authorized to have 96 students onboard. We anticipate enrolling a new third grader this week.
As always, if you have any feedback to improve our school, please touch base with me directly or submit your contributions in our new mailbox located in the Family Resource Center of the SouthSide Office. We always welcome fresh, new ideas!
Best wishes to all of our SouthSide families for a happy and healthy holiday season.

We believe students will thrive if we create a more personalized school experience for them with small group, individualized instruction that takes place in a small school setting where each student is known by all. Students will engage in a book rich environment where they’ll learn to love reading, expressing themselves, helping others, and problem solving. We also believe that teaching students to set goals, work hard, meet challenges, and help others will lead them to success in school and in life.
SouthSide Elementary Charter School provides a diverse group of Providence kindergarten through fifth grade students with a solid step towards college and community leadership. Students will learn to read, write, think logically, and problem solve on grade level within a curriculum that emphasizes academic rigor, excellence, and community engagement in an extended school day and year.
