Title I at SouthSide Elementary Charter Public School

Title I Schoolwide Program

Every Student. Every Opportunity.

SouthSide Elementary Charter School is proud to operate a Title I Schoolwide Program. Title I is the largest federal education program, providing funding to schools with higher percentages of students from low-income families. These funds help ensure that all students have equitable access to high-quality instruction and the academic support they need to succeed.

As a Schoolwide Program, Title I funding is used to strengthen the entire educational program, benefiting every student while providing additional support for those who need it most.

Purpose of Title I

The goal of Title I is to improve academic achievement for all students by providing additional resources and support that help every child meet Rhode Island's challenging academic standards.

At SouthSide, Title I funding helps us:

  • Strengthen reading and mathematics instruction

  • Provide targeted academic interventions

  • Close achievement gaps

  • Support students who need additional academic assistance

  • Expand opportunities for family engagement

  • Support continuous school improvement

How Students Receive Support

Student progress is monitored throughout the school year using classroom assessments, teacher observations, and academic data.

When a student needs additional support, our instructional team works together to determine the most appropriate interventions. Support may be provided by:

  • Classroom Teachers

  • Reading Intervention Teachers

  • Math Intervention Teachers

  • Instructional Specialists

  • Trained Instructional Paraprofessionals

Interventions are designed to supplement—not replace—high-quality classroom instruction. Student progress is reviewed regularly, and support is adjusted based on individual needs.

Supporting Our School Improvement Goals

Title I funding supports SouthSide's School Improvement Plan by helping us:

  • Increase student achievement in literacy and mathematics

  • Close achievement gaps among student groups

  • Improve student attendance and engagement

  • Strengthen family-school partnerships

  • Ensure all students have access to high-quality instruction and intervention

Partnering with Families

Families are essential partners in every child's education.

SouthSide encourages families to actively participate in their child's learning and in the continuous improvement of our Title I program.

Through Title I, we provide opportunities such as:

  • Family learning nights

  • Parent workshops

  • Literacy and math activities

  • Resources to support learning at home

  • Regular communication regarding student progress

  • Opportunities to provide feedback through surveys and meetings

  • We welcome families to share ideas and participate in planning, reviewing, and improving our Parent and Family Engagement Program each year.

Annual Title I Meeting

Each school year, SouthSide hosts an Annual Title I Meeting for families.

During this meeting, we review:

  • What Title I is

  • How Title I funds are used

  • School academic goals

  • Student assessments

  • Family engagement opportunities

  • Parents' rights under Title I

  • Ways families can support learning at home

  • All families are encouraged to attend.

Parents' Right to Know

Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), parents have the right to request information about the professional qualifications of their child's classroom teachers and instructional paraprofessionals.

Upon request, the school will provide information regarding:

  • State certification and licensure

  • Degree(s) earned

  • Areas of certification

  • Qualifications of instructional paraprofessionals

  • Families will also be notified if their child has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable state certification requirements, as required by federal law.

School-Parent Compact

SouthSide has developed a School-Parent Compact that outlines the shared responsibilities of families, students, and school staff in supporting student success.

The compact describes how we work together to create a strong partnership focused on improving academic achievement and helping every student reach their full potential.

Parent and Family Engagement Policy

Our Parent and Family Engagement Policy explains how SouthSide partners with families to support student learning and school improvement.

Families are encouraged to review the policy and participate in its annual review and revision.
